Star Wars Minis Customs and 3D Terrain.

Inspiration and tools for Terrain Making with Hirst Arts Molds.

I've bought some minis. I've bought some paint. I've bought some green stuff.
I've not tried painting minis before. Nor have I tried cutting them up and "pinning" them. I've never worked with green stuff before.
But I want to. Here's what happened.

Where to start?
I searched the web for inspiration. Something I wanted to try to do with a mini, that I haven't seen before. Something easy, as it was my first time.

The trouble was the image I found, I really enjoyed. So instead of starting with a basic paint job, then progressing cutting and gluing, pinning, and finally moulding, I found an image that I really liked, and decided to go all out.

This was the image I found. It's a photo of a statue which I believe is available to purchase.

The first stage was easy. Decide which minis I would need to utilise to make the figure. I settled on 3 figures.

Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jedi Master; from which I used the head and lightsabre.

Clone Trooper Grenadier; Main model

Battle Droid Officer; For the droid body and head.

And here are the results.

A quick side-by-side view.

How to.
Unfortunately I didn't take step-by-step photos, but here's a quick summary of what I did.

Cutting.

  • 1) I cut the lightsabre from Obi-Wan, as clode to his hands as possible.
  • 2) I cut Obi-Wan's head off at an angle so that I ensured I took his beard too.
  • 3) I cut the droid officers body and arms off.
  • 4) I removed the clone trooper's head.
  • 5) I removed the troopers gun, above and below his hand. (I reused both these parts of the gun in forming the lightsabre hilt.)
  • 6) I cut the clone trooper's left arm off at the shoulder.
  • 7) I then cut the left arm off at the elbow.
  • 8) I cut have way through the wrist on the left arm, enabling me to bend it into the "power-hand" angle.
  • 9) I scraped out the grenade, and gut individual fingers in the hand.
  • 10) I cut the trooper's right foot away from the base, and made a light cut below the knee and at the hip.
In retrospect I probably should have reformed the left leg too.

Gluing.
Using super glue I glued buts together.

  • 1) I attached Obi-Wan's head (although it could probably have been twisted a little more to the left.
  • 2) I attached a small part of the troopers cun above and below his right hand, and then attached the lightsabre.
  • 3) I removed some of the pack from the back of the droid, at an angle, then attached it to the base. I then glued the troopers foot to the droid. The cuts made it easy to form the troopers leg at an angle.
  • 4) I pinned the upper arm to the body.
  • 5) I pinned the lower arm to the upper arm.

Repositioning.
I used the hot/cold water method to reform parts of the sculpt.

  • 1) I repositioned the droids arms and head.
  • 2) I repositioned the troopers left hand.
  • 3) I repositioned the troopers right leg.

Green stuff.

  • 1) I filled a little green stuff under the troppers right knee.
  • 2) I filled in any gaps in the troopers left arm, where it had been pinned.
  • 3) The cape was made in seven parts.

Front left under belt. Front right under belt.
Front left above belt. Front right above belt.
Left under arm and back. Right under arm and back.
    The cape itself.
Getting the cape to form in a "dynamic pose" was much harder than I thought it would be.

Painting.
I don't recall the names of the paints, and what I mixed with what, but they were Citadel Paints (basic set).

  • 1) I painted the cape twice, with two different shades of brown.
  • 2) I touched up areas of the armour with black and white paint(Including the shoulder clips for the cape, and the lightsabre hilt).
  • 3) I recloured Obi-Wan's hair so it was a lighter shade, and closer to the colour of his hair on the statue.

Disclaimer.

It has been brought to my attention that there is a French language e-zine that published a "How-to-customise" in April 2008, the theme of this topic was a similar "General Kenobi" figure. My website is in no way affiliated with the website, the likeness between my ideas, and the ideas in the e-zine, are purely coincidental. The e-zine "Initiative" is available here.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi in Clone Trooper Armour statue is an 11 inch limited edition statue by Gentle Giant Ltd and is available to buy directly from their website here and through other retailers.
